Tender for Erode digital library soon

Better days ahead: Erode District Central Library is all set for a makeover as the tender to upgrade it is to be floated shortly.

ERODE: Erode digital library is all set to become a reality, as the tender for constructing the library building is to be floated soon. Sources at the District Library Office, Erode, told The Hindu that the authorities concerned would float the tender in about 20 days for the library which would come up in Sampath Nagar and be spread over about 70,000 sq.ft.

The sources said the services the library would offer could be compared with the best. Members could access the books online, place requests over the computer, get copies of books in a compact disk and much more.

Not only that, the library would have a separate section for those preparing for competitive examinations and students. And, the library would be networked with similar digital libraries in the State. The library would come up at Rs. 1.43 crore, as announced on the floor of the State Legislature. Former Erode Collector T. Udhayachandran had sanctioned Rs. 50 lakh from the Collector’s Discretionary Fund. The Local Library Authority would bear the rest.

At present the District Central Library has 2.3 lakh members and it has more than 23 lakh books. The sources said the library has recently enrolled as many students as possible under the Namathu Ulagam Noolagam scheme, launched targeting students in mind.

The next step was to enrol students from government-aided and self-financed schools.
