RAMANATHAPURAM: INS Parundu, a recently commissioned naval air station of Indian Navy, has arranged a few programmes to celebrate the Navy Week, an annual affair to commemorate the attack by its missile boats on Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. Commander Rajkumar, Commanding Officer, INS Parundu told The Hindu on Thursday that the celebrations would start on December 2. A group 50 volunteers would donate blood at the government hospital in Ramanathapuram. Invitation had been sent to three colleges and nine schools in Ramanathapuram, Kilakarai and Mandapam, including the Kendriya Vidyalaya, to send their students to visit INS Parundu on December 3. An air display had been arranged exclusively for the students. A movie would also be screened to them. The role played by the Indian Navy in the 1971 war and its services on safeguarding the country, the might of the force, achievements of its men an machines, capabilities of air wing of Indian Navy and others would be explained. Commander Man Rai said as many as 500 students were expected to participate in the event. Besides two helicopters, which would participate in the search and rescue show, one helicopter would be kept for their view. The youngsters would be motivated to join the Navy in various categories right from sailor to executive branch officers. Commander B.G. Reddy said a ceremonial event, “At Home Function” would be held next day. Collector T.N. Hariharan would be the chief guest. An air show would also organised at the time of sunset.
