Vice-Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University N. Ramachandran THANJAVUR: There is wide scope for Russian Universities for collaboration with Indian universities in subjects like nuclear engineering, said N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar Maniammai University, here on Thursday. Sharing his experiences with The Hindu on his recent visit to Moscow, Dr. Ramachandran said that Russia was strong in physics, chemistry, life sciences, integrated engineering, aerospace and nuclear engineering. Many universities in India also offer these courses. Periyar Maniammai University is offering courses in nuclear engineering. “There is scope for a tie-up,” Dr. Ramachandran said. To start with, Moscow State University has come forward to teach Russian language in Periyar Maniammai University. “I got this assurance from the university during the visit,” Dr. Ramachandran said. The Vice-Chancellor went as part of a 60 member delegation to take part in the Indo-Russian public discussion in Moscow on November 17. The programme was aimed at strengthening Indo-Russian ties. It has been arranged by the Soviet embassy in India after 20 long years. Dr. Ramachandran said that he made an appeal to Russia while speaking at the Indo-Russian Public discussion to have its accreditation programme like United States which started giving its accreditation through Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET) to Indian Universities under Washington accord. Russia can give its accreditation “I recalled the visit of Periyar EVR to Russia in 1932. Periyar was for a long time an admirer of the Russian Revolution. He was evincing special interest in how the October Revolution of Russia transformed the society and met the basic needs of individuals. I brought out a booklet on these things and distributed it to Russian scholars”, Dr. Ramachandran said. “In 2008, various Russian programmes were held in India as part of “Russia in India”. This year, “India in Russia” programme is going on and the discussion was a prelude to the visit of President Prathibha D. Patil to Moscow and the scheduled meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in December,” he said.
