Udhagamandalam: Freight vehicles should not be used to ferry passengers, said the Regional Transport Officer, the Nilgiris, D. Venkataraman. In a press note issued here on Thursday, he regretted that despite repeated warnings owners of freight vehicles, including pick-up trucks, are misusing their permits. He pointed out that on Tuesday a freight vehicle, which was transporting people met with an accident at Kadanad. The injured persons were undergoing treatment. The vehicle had been seized and appropriate action initiated against the owner. He warned that if an end was not put to this dangerous practice voluntarily, the department would come down hard on those who violated rules.
