‘Attacks on Indian students not racist’
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: “Most of the attacks on Indian students in Australia are opportunistic and not racist. Some students who were attacked may not be revealing the real reasons for the attacks on them,” said Kodur Ramamurthy, Governing Council member of United Indian Associations of Sydney.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Ramamurthy said: “Eighty per cent of the attacks were because of ‘attitude’ problems in the Indian students and their conduct. Why is it that only boys have been attacked and not Indian girls?”
Clarifying that he was not defending the attacks, Mr. Ramamurthy, who said he was running a civil construction company in Sydney for the last 12 years, said: “The parents of the affected students and media are being misled by these alleged attacks. Australia is a country of tolerant people and it is no longer a Whites-only country.” Appealing to the media not to term such attacks as “racist”, he said such sensationalisation could only affect the cordial relations between India and Australia.
