Okkoota to give impetus to Kannada’s classical status

K.N. Venkatasubba Rao

Okkoota has suggested a set of measures to the Government for addressing the classical status issue

‘HRD Ministry should establish a Centre for Excellence in classical Kannada at CIIL’

BANGALORE: The executive committee, constituted to look into the steps to be taken after classical status was given to Kannada, is set to take up the issue with the Centre shortly.

The executive committee, headed by the Secretary of the Department of Kannada and Culture, met recently and deliberated over the suggestions by the recently launched Karnataka Samshodhakra Okkoota. It has directed the okoota to prepare a comprehensive action report at the earliest for addressing the issue effectively.

The okkoota, which has been holding workshops for promoting multiple research guidelines in association with the Government, universities and private organisations on a regular basis, has suggested a set of measures to the Government for addressing the classical status issue with clarity in Kannada’s favour and to give a new impetus to the research activities in Kannada language and literature.

The okkoota has emphasised that the Ministry of Human Resource Development should establish a Centre for Excellence in classical Kannada (CECK) at the Mysore-based Central Institute of Indian Languages.

Grants

Once the CECK is established and financial grants obtained from the HRD, the CIIL is expected to associate with the CECK and continue with its ongoing research projects.

The major suggestions of the okkoota include documentation of archaic Kannada and the visual reconstruction of its development through graphics and other technical modes, scholarships for studying the classical language and introducing online courses on Kannada studies.

Research

On strengthening the research in Kannada, the okkoota has candidly admitted that research in Kannada is hardly exposed to various systems of knowledge related to the respective projects.

It has pointed out that the universities have been encouraging research projects in the traditional manner instead of exploring and encouraging a broader outlook.

In this context, it is desired that the research guides should also upgrade their understanding of the topics their students are working on.
