THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The emerging social media like Orkut, Twitter and Facebook will be the future mode of communication across the world, Dean of Student Affairs of Columbia Graduate School of Journalism Sreenath Sreenivasan has said. Speaking on “Emergence of Social Media’ at a function organised by the Alumni Association of Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Kerala, here on Thursday, Mr. Sreenivasan said unlike radio and television, people had a direct say in social media. Mr. Sreenivasan said that when it took 38 years for the radio to touch the critical mass of 50 million users, TV took 13 years, Internet four years and Facebook just two years to reach this critical users. According to him, too many people were making pronouncements without knowing the facts. Stating that the problems facing social media had to be addressed, Mr. Sreenivasan said it would not supplement anything and it was just a layer above other things. He called upon mediapersons to use social media in conjunction with traditional skills. Micro-blogging would be important in the days ahead, he said.
