History of Chennai in sound and light

Deepa H Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI: From June next year, visitors to Ripon Building, the seat of the Chennai Corporation, can watch a sound and light show on over three hundred years of the city’s history.

The civic body recently called for consultants to evolve a concept, develop content and produce the show in Tamil and English.

The tenders, which are being called for the third time, were opened recently.

Those who have been a consultant or executed a sound and light show in at least one monument of the Archaeological Survey of India or equivalent department in States between August 2004 and July 2009 alone can participate. The estimated cost of the bid is Rs. 15 lakh.

Evolution of the city

The successful consultant would have to portray the story of evolution of the city from 1638, highlighting important events in an interesting manner.

The firm or individual would, on the basis of artistic inputs, have to design and engineer the required hardware.

It would advise the Corporation on the kind of infrastructure required for the show.

A senior official of the civic body told The Hindu that either the light and sound show could be shown on the façade of Ripon Building or projected at the ground floor of the building, which is to become a museum soon.

Evaluation

The proposal submitted by the consultant would be evaluated by a committee of Chennai Corporation officials. Those that meet the standards fixed by it alone would be taken for further consideration. Only financial bids of those consultants who meet the standards set by the Corporation would be opened.
