‘At least two among every 100 babies born have heart defects’ Belgaum: More than 2,000 children with heart problems, including congenital defects, are awaiting surgery in the State and the situation calls for collective efforts by their parents, teachers, departments of Education and Health and Family Welfare, and district administrations to ensure them treatment under Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya Scheme, cardiologist M.D. Dixit said here on Friday. The scheme was a boon for children with heart problems and it should be implemented efficiently and optimally, he said. Dr. Dixit, who is the director of the KLE Society’s Heart Foundation, said that at least two among every 100 babies born had heart defects and had structural developmental disease. If operated early, they could lead a normal life, he said. Incidentally, a majority of such children were from the underprivileged section of society in rural areas, he said.
