BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday said prima facie there is material for framing contempt charges against Minister for Primary Education Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, for refusing to comply with an earlier court order directing the State to permit an educational institution in Bangalore from starting an English-medium school. M.S. Khan, an office-bearer of Modern School, Ejipura, had filed the contempt petition after the State refused him permission to start an English-medium school. Mr. Khan contended that the refusal amounted to contempt of court and he had arraigned Mr. Kageri as one of the parties in the contempt petition. When the matter came up, a Division Bench comprising Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice V. Jagannathan observed that the State had not filed objections to the contempt petition. It said prima facie there is material for framing charges against Mr. Kageri. The Bench adjourned further hearing of the case. Stayed Justice H.N. Nagmohan Das on Friday stayed the demolition of buildings on Azad Road in Thirthalli in Shimoga district. The court passed the order on petitions by Umesh Shenoy and 53 other residents of Thirthalli. The residents alleged that the civic authorities of Thirthalli had unilaterally decided to go ahead with the demolition of a building on Azad Road for road widening. They said they had neither been given notices nor had their lands been acquired. They had not been paid compensation. Justice Nagmohan Das adjourned further hearing of the case.
