Computer education to be part of syllabus from Standard VI to X Two library classes to be conducted a week CHENNAI: Improve the quality of textbooks, make them child-friendly and more attractive and ensure that the books are produced on time, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi advised School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu and the syllabus committee on Friday. The Minister was explaining to the Chief Minister the salient features of the syllabus finalised under the State government’s scheme of equitable standard education. As for strategies to improve the quality of production, different models, including that of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), would be examined, according to an official. A press release stated that computer education would be part of the syllabus for school students from Standard VI to X. Two library classes would be conducted a week. The subject of social sciences included economics. Practical sessions would be part of the subject of science for students of standards IX and X. The release added that a panel, comprising school teachers of all streams and professors, was constituted to prepare the syllabus. The draft syllabus was published on the website. Public hearings at the levels of taluk, district and State were held to elicit views and opinions. On the basis of the feedback, the syllabus was finalised. Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan and Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi were among those present when Mr. Thangam Thennarasu briefed the Chief Minister. According to an official of the Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation, tenders have been floated for the printing of textbooks as per the new syllabus. Applications would be accepted till December 18, he said, adding that the emphasis was on quality of paper and printing.
