“Statehood will include all four regions of Puducherry”

KARAIKAL: Geographical contiguity is not a necessary condition for statehood and statehood for Puducherry would include all the four regions of Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and Puducherry, said Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy here on Saturday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the foundation-laying of Nalankulam revitalisation project of the Thirunallar Temple Town Development Project, Mr. Narayanasamy said that the Prime Minister had given an assurance to convene a parliamentary advisory committee to look into the statehood demand.

Earlier, Iqbal Singh, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, along with Mr. Narayanasamy and Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam inaugurated the Fisheries Training Institute at Kalikuppam.

]The institute will provide free training for fisher folk on value-added fisheries products.

Further, the eight fishermen from Karaikalmedu here and 10 from Tamil Nadu, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy early in November, were released on Thursday. They were expected to return with their boats on Monday, he said.

Tourism and Fisheries Minister Malladi Krishna Rao; Collector N. Vasantha Kumar; P.R. Siva, MLA; A. Marimuthu, MLA Thirunallar, were present.
