MADURAI: Traditional artisans such as potters languishing without adequate support or the technical assistance needed to keep up with the fast-changing market now have help at hand. The Madurai Division of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is implementing a Rs. 1 lakh-project to help these artisans by providing them with new tools and equipment besides organising interactions with successful artisans in different parts of the State. “A group of 20 potters in Vadugapatti of Theni district has been chosen for receiving ‘B-type improved potters wheel’ apart from the requisite kits free of cost,” M.T. Wakode, KVIC Divisional Director of Madurai Division, which covers ten southern districts, told The Hindu. Being ordered from Gajanan Naik Multidisciplinary Training Centre, a KVIC centre located in Dahanu in Thane district of Maharashtra, the wheels cost Rs. 3,150 a piece. This project, being sponsored by the Directorate of Mineral-Based Industry under KVIC, will help the potters know of the recent developments in new technologies and enhance their productivity, he said. The potters would also be taken on exposure visits to a pottery cluster project of the United Nations Development Programme at Chunkankadai village in Kanyakumari district besides Manamadurai and other places in southern Tamil Nadu.
