Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 40 women from economically backward families can now look forward to earning a decent income — thanks to a gesture by the Abu Dhabi chapter of the All-Kerala Women’s Colleges Alumni (AKWCA). At a function here on Sunday, the women received sewing machines donated by the alumni to help them find a means of livelihood. Cheshire Home former secretary Vimala Menon gave away the machines. AKWCA president Sailaja Sarath, treasurer Seena Hari, Indian Social Centre (Abu Dhabi) secretary John, Malayali Samajam former president Pallickal Sujai and Ananthapuram Non-Resident Association secretary Saratchandran Nair were present. Formed in 1998, AKWCA includes the alumni of all the women’s colleges in the State. Ms. Sarath said it had identified needy women for the assistance programme based on their family circumstances. “All of them were widows left to fend for themselves. We identified 100 widows for the programme. As many as 20 women were presented with sewing machines at a similar function held at Kozhikode last month,” she said. AKWCA had arranged the marriage of 28 couples and distributed wheelchairs to 55 persons.
