COIMBATORE: The Telugupalayam Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) that treats effluents discharged from the textile dyeing units here will have a reverse osmosis (RO) facility too by the end of next year. According to an official of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, as many as 24 dyeing units are connected to the treatment plant. These are cottage units involved in yarn dyeing. The treatment plant has primary and secondary treatment facilities. The units spent about Rs. 2 crore and established a bio-treatment system and this will be commissioned in a month. It will help in removing the residual colours. For the RO plant, the units have jointly contributed Rs. 2 crore and prepared a project report. The total project cost is expected to be Rs. 10 crore. They are awaiting subsidy from the Central and State Governments. The official said that initially, Coimbatore had 62 yarn dyeing units. They had formed two CETPs. The 19 units that were connected to one CETP were closed down as they were unable to commission the treatment plant. Of the 41 units that formed the Telugupalayam CETP, 17 were closed down as they were unable to contribute for the reverse osmosis facility. The remaining units had taken efforts for the RO plant. Only the units that had complete effluent treatment facility were encouraged in the city and four processing units in Mettupalayam had individual facilities.
