CHENNAI: The city joined a list of over 400 cities which have hosted a Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference. TED has become so pervasive that the English language might soon have a new addition to its vocabulary – ‘a TED moment.’ It is about moments which inspire, moves one to tears, drives one to laughter and makes one read meaning into things which seem ordinary at first sight — sometimes all rolled into one moment. Many such moments peppered the TEDx event (where x stands for independently organised event) held for the first time in the city at IIT-Madras on Sunday. TED is a non-profit organisation which started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. TEDx [http://tedxchennai.com/] events, similar to TED, are about ‘spreading ideas.’ These are events in which local communities come together to appreciate innovation across fields and is licensed through TED. It is about reaching out and inspiring people to learn, share and discuss “ideas worth spreading” that have the power and potential to make a difference in our lives, our world and in Chennai. The event drew a wide variety of speakers. Kiruba Shankar, one of the organisers of the event, saidTEDx event will become an annual fixture from now.
