Request to cell phone users

— Photo : K. Pichumani

A pedestrian using a mobile phone while crossing the road at Anna Nagar.

It is very common to see people using cell phones, irrespective of their age, while walking on roads. This practice is as dangerous as using cell phones while driving or drunken driving.

We can see news items on a regular basis about accidents that occur owing to such negligence.

Police Department and voluntary organisations should urge cell phone users to strictly follow safety rules.

It is also equally important for educational institutions, offices and factories to prevail upon their staff that they do not use cell phones while walking or driving.

Avenue trees need proper maintenance

This is with reference to R.K. Sundaram’s letter, “Electrocution risk” (The Hindu dated November 16). It is a welcome gesture by the Chennai Corporation that a scheme for planting an average of 80,000 saplings in city a year has been launched. While taking steps to enhance greenery, the civic body should also ensure maintenance of avenue trees already in existence. People have often written pointing out at trees that are not pruned, which cover streetlights leading to poor illumination of streets.

I request the Chennai Mayor to do the needful.

Desilting unfinished

The Virugambakkam canal is a nightmare to all citizens. People cannot be satisfied with compensation or other such relief materials. The canal should be desilted so that water flow is completely free.

It is surprising that that the work keeps getting delayed.

Flow of water in the canal on November 14 is better than the previous years. But, it is nowhere near the optimum level had the desilting work been completed as planned.

We request the authorities concerned to treat this very urgent and do the needful at the earliest.

Sewage flow

It is indeed a laudable measure by the Metrowater to filter solid waste entering sewer lines. Waste dumped by roadside eateries in many parts of the city also impede free flow. This menace must be checked. During heavy showers, stagnant water is indiscriminately let out to the nearby sewer manhole by Corporation staff. Stormwater brings along with it paper bits, leaves, coconut husk, rotten vegetables, etc., which also affect sewage flow. R. K. Sundaram

Suburban areas need attention

It is very unfortunate that for more than 30 years, Chennai’s western suburban areas such as Anna Nagar West, Padi, Korrattur, Pattravakkam, Ambattur Industrial Estate, Ambattur, Annanur, Thirumullaivayil, during the monsoon get flooded. The local bodies do not have sufficient equipment and manpower to take steps during emergency. The government should provide additional funds and equipment to these local bodies and create a flood control and rescue department.

Delayed subway

The Southern Railway has constructed a subway near Pallavaram Darga Road railway gate. Although the railways has completed its work, the Highways Department has to lay entrance road on both sides. The delay in completing the work causes lot of inconvenience to the public. Sewage and rainwater stagnate leading to health hazards. Many persons have fallen into open pits and injured themselves. Stray dog menace

Stray dog menace is a perennial problem at Dhandeeswar Nagar 6th Main Road, 6th Main Road Avenue, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Cross Streets, which are part of Velachery . At nights, people, especially the aged, are often chased by stray dogs.

Constant barking of dogs at night is a nuisance as well. The Corporation should take immediate remedial steps and put an end to this problem.

Provide speed-limit signs

Over-speeding and reckless driving are causes for many road accidents in city. To check this trend, speed-limit signs must be provided in all accident-prone areas.

Mobile traffic police and ambulances must become more proactive. Violators of traffic rules must be punished.
