HYDERABAD: The State government has sought an assistance of about Rs. 1,162 crore from International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) for development of agriculture to increase food production and improve food security during the next three years.

A detailed proposal was submitted to IFAD President Kanayo F. Nwanze by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah here on Sunday. The proposal was accepted in principle by the IFAD chief who promised to examine it positively and help the State.

Director-General of ICRISAT William D. Dar, Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy and senior officials Rachel Chatterjee and Sunil Sharma were present. Giving the details, the Chief Minister stated that the assistance was sought for seed development (Rs. 400 cr.), increasing rice and pulses production (Rs. 321 cr.), farm mechanisation (Rs. 200 cr.), organic farming (Rs. 114 cr.) farmers’ training (Rs. 50 cr.), development of rain-fed cultivation through water conservation technologies (Rs. 50 cr.) and others.

Mr. Rosaiah told Dr. Nwanze that the farmers in the State had no facility to store their produce till they got remunerative price. Cold storages and scientific marketing were the need of the hour for the farming community.

Responding to the proposal, the IFAD President reiterated that the organisation was committed to fighting poverty and hunger through agriculture development and food security. Thrust areas of IFAD in Andhra Pradesh would be institutional building, policy advocacy, linking farmers to financial services, input and output marketing, seed development, capacity building, training of farmers and water management in irrigated and rain-fed areas, Dr. Nwanze detailed.

Success of projects in the past in the State enhanced the possibility of new projects and the details would be worked by IFAD, AP Government and ICRISAT in due course.
