Reliance cuts SMS rates

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Reliance Communications recently lowered short messaging service (SMS) rates to the paise level through two schemes for its CDMA and GSM user base.

The new SMS tariff plans — a paisa per SMS and unlimited SMSs at Re.1 a day — have been rolled out as add-on plans and are applicable for all Reliance Mobile customers irrespective of CDMA or GSM network, prepaid or postpaid and roaming or not.

Reliance Mobile users can avail of the 1p/SMS plan by subscribing to a Standard Tariff Voucher of Rs.11 per month. Users can subscribe to the unlimited SMS plan against a daily deduction of Re. 1 from their prepaid balance.

“We have taken the lead in the industry to revitalise and reinvigorate SMS usage,” said Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications.

Texting as a highly valued service among young professionals, youth, students and the tech-savvy segments had been largely ignored and untouched in the tariff war that had of late led to irrational pricing, he said.

Reliance has also targeted SMSs to intensify its foray into the GSM segment where it is still a greenfield operator. The chunk of the Rs.3,000-crore revenue from SMSs is from GSM users.
