School recalls Gandhian values

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya celebrated its Annual Day in a grand manner here on Sunday, remembering the values of Mahatma Gandhi, who laid the foundation stone of this institution here way back in 1946.

Speaking on the occasion, K. Chandru, Judge, Madras High Court, recalled how 50 years ago he had visited the Vidyalaya as a student. “After so many years, when I visit this place, I find a lot of change around the place. High-rise buildings have come up everywhere, but the Vidyalaya itself has not changed. It has continued to serve the poor and needy,” he said.

He added that though the whole country was changing under the liberalisation and globalisation policies of the government, Mahatma Gandhi had an alternative vision for development. He also spoke about how Gandhiji came to his rescue when he was faced with a crisis in delivering a judgment.

“In such situations, I always follow what Gandhiji had said. I think how my judgment would help the betterment of the poor,” he said.
