Coimbatore: The Charles Wallace India Trust has called for applications from emerging and mid-career Indian artists to undertake a residency at Spike Island.

Emerging artists

According to a British Council release, the Trust has supported research residencies for emerging and mid-career Indian artists at Spike Island since 1999.

Artists hosted to date include Aditi Kulkarni (2009), Sukanya Ghosh (2008), Chintan Upadhyay (2004), Sanchayan Ghosh (2003) and Sudarshan Shetty (1999).

“This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated practitioner who feels that he would benefit from the time, space and opportunity to undertake a residency at Spike Island”.

For the first time, Spike Island is accepting applications directly for the 2010 residency and will then make a recommendation to the Charles Wallace India Trust.

Decision

A decision will be made in liaison with the Trust and the artists will be notified by the end of January 2010. The award for three-month residency covers international airfare, accommodation and living costs, private studio, on-going curatorial support, pastoral care and some technical assistance .

The deadline for applications is January 10, 2010.

According to the release, Spike Island has a vibrant exhibition and events programme which brings in regional, national and international audiences with whom the Charles Wallace India Trust Residency Artist can engage.
