Teachers to be recruited to Ayurveda college

Staff Correspondent

New appointees may be required to give an undertaking

VIMS to be upgraded at a cost of Rs. 50 crore

Additional Rs. 2 crore may be sanctioned for Taranath college, hospital

Breaking new ground: Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda at the foundation laying ceremony in Bellary on Tuesday. He is flanked by Minister for Tourism G. Janardhan Reddy and KMF Chairman G. Somashekar Reddy.

BELLARY: The State Government is contemplating the appointment of the teaching staff exclusively for the Taranath Government Ayurveda College here, Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda has said. He also called upon practitioners of Ayurveda to strive hard to propagate and popularise the system of medicine.

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the men’s and women’s hostel at Taranath Government Ayurveda College here on Tuesday, Mr. Gowda said that Ayurveda could cure many diseases and did not have any side-effects. “When several countries are opting for Ayurveda because of its various advantages, efforts should be made by all to popularise it here,” he said. Ayurveda practitioners should instil confidence among the people about the system, he said.

Responding to questions by presspersons, Mr. Gowda said that he was aware of the problems faced by the college especially with regard to teaching staff and infrastructure. He said that the teachers who had been appointed and posted to the college got themselves transferred. “To find a permanent solution to the shortage of teaching staff, the Government plans to recruit teachers exclusively for the college and then take an undertaking from them. If this materialises, many of the problems faced by the college will be solved,” he said, adding that a final decision on the matter would be taken soon.

Additional funds

As for infrastructure development, Mr. Gowda said that Rs. 1.2 crore had already been sanctioned to upgrade the college and hospital. “After going around the hospital and discussing the matter with the staff, it has come to my notice that much more needs to be done. In consultation with the Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) director steps will be taken to allocate an additional Rs. 2 crore for the purpose,” he said.

Mr. Gowda said that the proposal to establish a University for Ayurveda was before the Government; discussions on its location were under way.

Mr. Gowda said that a proposal to develop Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) here as a super-speciality hospital at an estimated cost of Rs. 120 crore was also before the Government. The Government would ensure that the proposal was implemented. A proposal to approach the Union Government for funds was also being discussed, he said.

Mr. Gowda said that to mark the golden jubilee of VIMS, the Government had approved a Rs. 50-crore proposal for upgrading the college and hospital. A sum of Rs. 13 crore had already been released and work had started, he said.
