BANGALORE: China continued to rule the roost finishing on top of the heap with 47 gold, 18 silver and six bronze as the curtain came down on the Fourth edition of the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games, at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor stadium here on Tuesday. India from its seventh position in the last games at Chinese Taipei leapfrogged to the second slot with a whopping 110 medals which included 32 gold and 38 silver. Thailand finished next best (26 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze). The closing ceremony, much delayed prompted some of the teams to threaten a walk-out. And when it finally got underway turned out to be a damp squib. “The opening was exhaustive, so we could not have the resources to make the closing ceremony any bigger,” was the official statement. Indian swimmers put up an impressive display on the final day, grabbing three golds, four silvers and one bronze, which took its overall tally to 10 gold, 10 silver and four bronze. An elated Indian coach, Virendra Kumar Dabas said: “It is our best performance to date in the Games.” Prasanta shinesThe 28-year old Prasanta Karmakar claimed his fourth individual gold in the meet when he won the 100m freestyle race in S9 category. Karmakar, thus topped the list of medal winners for the country with four gold, two silver and one bronze. His second silver of the meet came when he anchored the Indian quartet, which finished second in the 4 x 100m medley relay. “I am delighted with my performance and it gives me a lot of hope for winning a medal in my section at the Commonwealth Games next year,” said Karmakar, who trains under Nihar Ameen and is supported by the Go Sports Foundation here. The other gold winners for India were Dharmendra Ahirwar (S4) and Kanchan Chaudhri (women’s S9).
