Stalin inaugurates Ayurveda College

Nagercoil: The deputy Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin inaugurated Government Ayurveda Medical College, first of its kind in the State, situated at Kottar in Nagercoil on Wednesday.

The long pending demand of the people of the district to set up an Ayurveda Medical College hospital had been fulfilled by admitting the first batch of students.

He also unveiled the statue of Thanthai Periyar at Lekshimpuram samathuvapuram and flagged off a human chain organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to make Kanyakumari the ‘plastic-free district’ by the end of this year. Students from various schools and colleges in the district participated in the awareness procession.

India Cements had come forward to recycle the plastic waste to generate power and hence the Deputy Chief Minister flagged the operation of lorries collecting the wastes.

He also handed over shields to five bankers including Indian Overseas Bank, Kanyakumari District Central Co-operative Bank, State Bank of India, Indian Bank and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development for issuing economic assistance to self-help groups. He also gave district level Manimekalai awards to five self help groups including the Federation of Rajakkamangalam village panchayat, Sabarmathi Sakothara Vazuv Sangam SHG, Mukkadal Fisherwomen Shark SHG and Thiruvalluvar SHG. He also distributed the incentive amount of Rs. 1 lakh each to the federation of self help groups at Gandhipuram and Putheri.

The deputy Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for constructing a railway over-bridge at Putheri and a new bus stand at Marthandam.

He also distributed various welfare assistance to the members of weaker section and physically handicapped persons.

The ‘Kani’ tribe belonging to 16 villages including Mudavanpothai, Valiyayela, Thottamalai, Mothiramalai were put to untold hardship owing to lack of power connections. This was the first time household power supply was provided to these people by relaxing the rules.

The Government had spent Rs. 1 crore for providing power connections in these villages, the inaugural function of which was held at Parvathipuram substation.

He also attended the marriage of the son of C.S.I Bishop of Kanyakumari Devakadadisham and the inauguration of a new building at Holy Cross Hospital at Vetturnimadam.

The folk dance performed by a team from Madurai during the inaugural function of the samathuvapuram at Lekshmipuram left the onlookers spellbound.

More than 1200 police personnel were deployed in different parts of the district to provide security to the deputy Chief Minister.
