Automatic Test Equipment at airport yet to be installed

Special Correspondent

Due to non-identification of the place for setting it up the equipment is lying idle Personnel trained to service this new voice communication system too

CHENNAI: Officials of the Specialised Maintenance Unit at the Air Traffic Services (ATS) complex at Anna airport are concerned over the delay in installing Automatic Test Equipment.

According to the unit officials, the equipment was imported from United Kingdom nearly a month ago. It is meant for servicing VHF Trans Receivers , which has been installed in about 40 airports in the country.

Due to non-identification of the place for setting up the equipment, it is lying idle in the godown at the ATS complex.

A senior officer said in case any one of the VHF Trans Receivers developing a technical snag, it has to be sent to the U.K. for servicing. It would take a long time.

Moreover, the unit has already trained a few people in servicing this new voice communication system. So, the officers should not delay its installation any further, he said.

The unit has a team, which is capable of servicing radars, instrument landing systems, radar controller workstation monitors and new VHF Trans Receivers.

Last year alone, the unit saved nearly Rs.2 crore for to the Airports Authority of India through its servicing network. A major advantage of the unit is that it is situated within the country and any equipment from airports across the country that needed to be serviced could be brought quickly to Chennai and returned to the airport concerned within a short period of time after the service, the authorities added.
