HRF to screen film on Bhopal gas tragedy today

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Human Rights Forum will screen a film and organise a photo display of Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 marking the completion of 25 years of the incident, at Visakha Public Library near BVK College on Thursday evening. The 27-minute film is titled ‘It happened in Bhopal’.

“It’s 25 years since the Bhopal tragedy occurred. Poisonous gases emitted from the Union Carbide factory owned by American multinational company producing pesticides on Dec. 3, 1984 morning. Some 3,787 people died on that day and the toll rose to 35,000 till date.

And about three lakhs have taken ill and are yet to recover. People are still fighting for compensation and the Indian government was helpless against the MNC. This is the situation after 25 years,” lamented HRF State secretary V.S. Krishna.

He felt it was evident that the Indian government had failed to learn its lesson from the tragedy as a destructive industrial policy was still in vogue. There was need to create awareness on the incident and protect ourselves, he said.

Rally

The Forum for Better Visakha will conduct an awareness rally on the occasion to enlighten the public on the preventive steps to be taken for averting disasters like the Bhopal gas tragedy. The rally will commence from the Gandhi Statue opposite GVMC office at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Further particulars can be had from member of FBV S. Bhujanga Rao.
