CHENNAI: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting S. Jagathratchagan on Wednesday said All India Radio (AIR) should take upon itself the task of identifying and promoting young musicians as they needed good exposure. Inaugurating a five-day Margazhi music festival, organised jointly by AIR and the Academy of Indian Music and Arts, the Minister said AIR, which was not driven by the motive of profit-making and business obligations, alone could provide an opportunity to young talent.
“Despite the proliferation of television channels and radio stations, AIR continues to be a favourite entertainment medium of people in urban as well as rural areas.”
He appreciated AIR for organising the music festival much before the commencement of Margazhi. AIR Deputy Director-General Norren Naqvi said it was upholding the great Indian tradition and its music collections in the archives were unique.
T.V. Goplakrishnan said AIR was a depository of Indian tradition and also serving music lovers outside Chennai, who otherwise did not have the opportunities to listen to music on a daily basis. AIR Deputy Director General, Southern Region, K. Srinivasaraghavan welcomed the gathering.
