Mobile basketball tourney from today

15 boys and 10 girls’ teams participating, says DBA president T.S.R. Prasad

Kit, pocket allowance are being provided to the players selected for the State teams


VISAKHAPATNAM: The District Basketball Association’s efforts to popularise the game are showing results as more players and organisations are getting involved in the game.

Till very recently the participation of women or girls teams is almost nil but now there are more players and more teams and the players on the distaff side getting selected for the State teams.

DBA’s mobile basketball tournament for schools, introduced a few years ago to popularise the game at school-level and also spot budding talent, is gaining popularity. In this tournament, the matches are played at different schools and are timed in such a way that a good number of pupils of the school, where the match is played, witness the game. This year’s tournament, commencing on Thursday and scheduled to conclude on December 7, has 15 boys teams and as many as 10 girls’ teams, said DBA president T.S.R. Prasad and secretary B. Ramayya at a press conference, they addressed along with AU Director of Physical Education M. Syam Babu and others on Wednesday.

The tournament commences at Visakha Valley School on Thursday morning.

The DBA is also providing assistance in the shape of kit, pocket allowance, etc. to the players selected for the State teams.

The following players were selected from the district to represent Andhra Pradesh in various National level, South Zone tournaments or State-level camps during this year: J. Tarun Kumar, A. Abhilash, B. Bhavani, A. Varalakshmi; R. Ravikumar, N. Nagendra, S. Suryakala, U. Srinivasa Rao, Y. Sai Divya, Devagiri, P. Jagadeesh, P.Yamuna and V. Gopi.
