Bijapur: With the district receiving good rainfall, the area under rabi cultivation has increased considerably. Sowing has been completed on 5.72 lakh hectares as against the target of 5.70 lakh hectares. According to sources in the Agriculture Department, there has been a good demand for Bengal gram and wheat seeds owing to good climatic conditions for sowing. In Bijapur taluk, sowing of Bengal gram has been completed on 30,974 hectares as against the target of 38,750 hectares. In Basavanabagewadi taluk, sowing has been completed on 38,351 hectares as against the target of 28,520 hectares. In Indi taluk, sowing has been completed on 41,850 hectares as against the target of 28,190 hectares. While in Muddebihal taluk, sowing of Bengal gram has been completed on 66,991 hectares as against the target of 30,140 hectares, in Sindagi taluk, 27,686 hectares of land has been covered as against the target of 25,400 hectares. In all, Bengal gram has been sown on 2, 05,852 hectares as against the target of 1, 51,000 hectares in the district. The second major rabi crop in the district is wheat. Sowing of wheat has been completed on 79,127 hectares as against the target of 54,000 hectares. In Bijapur taluk, sowing of wheat has been completed on 16,269 hectares as against the target of 14,560 hectares. The area covered in Basavanabagewadi taluk is 14,776 hectares as against the target of 10,200 hectares, in Indi taluk, 74,055 hectares as against the target of 54,990 hectares, according to sources. In Muddebihal taluk, the area under wheat cultivation is 7,720 hectares as against the target of 6,950 hectares. In Sindagi taluk, sowing of wheat has been completed on 14,262 hectares as against the target of 8,920 hectares. However, the area under jowar and sunflower cultivation has come down. The target in the district for jowar cultivation was 2,00,800 hectares and 1,40,000 hectares for sunflower. Sowing of these crops has been completed on 1,77,421 hectares and 72,835 hectares, respectively. Anticipating a good demand for groundnut seeds in December and January, the Agriculture Department has kept 34,450 quintals of seeds ready for distribution. Officers concerned have been instructed to distribute groundnut seeds at 75 per cent subsidy from December 10 through 18 centres set up across the district.
