Colleges in Telangana closed for 15 days

Special Correspondent

All government, aided, private junior, polytechnics, degree and university colleges to be shut

Decision to close colleges taken at a meeting of Ministers belonging to Telangana

Ministers also discuss unrest among students in Nalgonda, Warangal and twin cities

HYDERABAD: Concerned over the students’ participation in the agitation for separate Telangana and the unrest taking a violent turn in some areas, the government on Thursday ordered closure of higher education institutions for 15 days in all the 10 districts of Telangana with effect from Friday.

An order issued by the Department of Higher Education said that in view of the student unrest in some educational institutions, the government decided to close from December 4 to 18 all government, government-aided and private junior, polytechnics, degree and university colleges, including those offering courses in MBA, MCA, pharmacy, law and engineering. The order would be applicable to these institutions in Hyderabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Warangal, Nalgonda, Medak, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar.

Situation reviewed

The decision to shut down the institutions was taken at a meeting of Ministers belonging to the Telangana region held in the chambers of Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy. The Minister took stock of the situation in the wake of shifting of TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao from the Khammam Government Hospital to Nizam’s Insitute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) earlier in the day.

The Ministers also discussed the unrest among students in Nalgonda and Warangal besides the twin cities where they had come out openly in support of KCR’s indefinite fast. Subsequently, they instructed the officials to review the situation in educational institutions and take a decision on their closure. Asked whether hostels and messes would also be closed, the officials only said that that classes would not take place during the period.

Meanwhile, Labour Minister R.Venkat Reddy, who called on KCR in the Khammam hospital on Wednesday to appeal to him to end his fast, said that the TRS president was shifted to NIMS on his choice as well as the advice of a team of doctors monitoring his health.
