MUMBAI: Virender Sehwag’s unbeaten 284 (239b, 40x4, 7x6) helped India post 443 for one in 79 overs on the second day of the final Test against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium here on Thursday. This was India’s highest single-day score in Tests. The home side led by 50 runs at close of play. Sehwag reached his 100 from 101 balls with a swept boundary off Muttiah Muralitharan. His double hundred, scored off 168 balls, was the second-fastest double century in Test cricket, behind Nathan Astle’s 153-ball effort against England in 2001-02. Sehwag now has six scores above 200, an Indian record. Sehwag figured in a 221-run opening partnership with Tamil Nadu batsman M. Vijay, who scored 87 (121b, 10x4, 1x6) before being trapped in front by slow left-armer Rangana Herath. After Vijay’s dismissal, Sehwag was joined by Rahul Dravid (62 batting) and the pair added 222 runs in 39.5 overs for the second wicket before stumps. Sehwag is now 16 runs short of becoming the first cricketer to score three triple centuries in Tests. His triple centuries have come against Pakistan (Multan, 2004) and South Africa (Chennai, 2008). Australia’s Don Bradman and West Indies’ Brian Lara have also two scores in excess of 300 each.
