Moment to cherish: Municipal Commissioner B. Sreedhar and Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy display the JNNURM awards won by the Greater Visakhapantam Municipal Corporation at Visakhapatnam on Friday. VISAKHAPATNAM: With several projects scheduled for completion in 2010, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation will endeavour to win awards in the Urban Infrastructure Governance (UIG) category of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Municipal Commissioner B. Sreedhar has said. The flyover, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), underground drainage and several water supply augmentation works would be commissioned in 2010. Stress on team workWith the GVMC winning two awards, its performance would be watched and there was more responsibility to rise up to the expectations, Mr. Sreedhar said replying to a felicitation by GVMC Officers’ Welfare Association on Friday. To realise the completion of the works on schedule, other departments like Town Planning, Public Health and Revenue should co-operate with the Engineering Department. The Commissioner and Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao received awards for Best Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) city and first in “Pro-poor reforms” in the implementation of the JNNURM projects in 2008-09 at the JNNURM Day in New Delhi on Thursday. Dedicating the award to people of the city who made it possible by their cooperation in enabling the corporation taking up several works, the Commissioner said he and the Mayor merely represented the staff of the GVMC. He handed over the cheques for Rs.4 lakhs to Rs.2 lakhs to Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy and Additional Commissioner (General) S. Krishna Murthy for depositing in the respective accounts. Mr. Jayarami Reddy described the awards as a result of collective efforts. With his quick responses, the Commissioner took special interest and endeavoured hard to turn negative aspects into positive ones with the co-operation of the Mayor and the elected body. Executive Engineer K.V.N. Ravi said the award was for overall performance and integrated reports submitted for the award in November contained inputs from Education and Urban Community Development as well. The creation of a corpus of Rs.5 crore for BSUP as mandated by the mission was the stepping stone for success. Additional Commissioners Pola Bhaskar and Purnachandra Rao, Chief City Planner Venkataratnam, Financial Advisor Mangapathi Rao, association president and Special Officer (Urban Health Centres) Juvvala Nageswara Rao spoke.
