MCI fiat on PG medical seats

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued guidelines to all government medical colleges to increase their intake of postgraduate students provided they have the required facilities to house the students.

This follows the recommendation made by the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) to the MCI in September, said G.T. Subhas, Dean and Director, BMCRI.

He said that this would result in an increase of 55 postgraduate seats across 18 disciplines offered by the BMCRI. “As of now, we have 70 seats, but for 2010-2011, we will have 125 seats in the PG courses,” he told The Hindu. “This will have a two-pronged effect,” he said. “The current shortage of teachers in courses like anatomy will be reduced if more students are admitted for the PG courses,” Dr. Subhas said.

“There is also a dearth of doctors in rural areas, especially in the clinical and surgical departments, and this will be a positive step in the direction of meeting this shortage,” he added.
