DYFI leaders acquitted

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-III has acquitted six leaders of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), including its district president P.A. Mohammed Riyas, in a case of attack on the office of Crime weekly at Puthiyara here five years ago.

Magistrate S. Resmi exonerated DYFI leaders C.P. Sulaiman; P. Nikhil; P.M. Jamsheer; P. Bijesh; and O.M. Bharadwaj of all charges in the case. The prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused, the court said.

According to the prosecution, the six-member DYFI gang had attacked the Crime weekly office at Puthiyara on February 5, 2005 in protest against a report published in the magazine against Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Kasaba police had registered a case against the six DYFI leaders under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
