Draft of local bodies’ ward delimitation on December 21

KOZHIKODE: District Collector P.B. Salim on Friday warned political parties against attempts to influence officials who were authorised to conduct delimitation of wards of local bodies.

He was addressing a meeting of leaders of political parties at the Collectorate.

The Collector said secretaries of district panchayats, grama panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations would oversee the delimitation process in the local bodies under their jurisdiction. The Block Development Officers will prepare reports on the delimitation of wards in block panchayats as officials of the Election Commission. Hence, interference in their duty would amount to violation of election rules. He said the secretaries of local bodies had been directed to submit their report on ward delimitation by December 15. A draft of the redrawn electoral map will be published on December 21. Complaints , if any, can be submitted till January 5.

The number of wards in grama panchayats and block panchayats will be between 13 and 23. For 15,000 population in a grama panchayat, there can be 13 members; for every additional 2,500 population, there can be an extra member. In block panchayats, there can be 13 members for up to 1,50,000 population and one additional member for every 25,000 extra population. The area of each ward would be determined by density of population and its geographical location.
