Staff Reporter

Kakinada: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) will be extending a financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 to mentally challenged persons in the district for which Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi has initiated necessary steps.

Besides, arrangements were being made to implement insurance scheme ‘Niramaya’ for the mentally challenged, said Assistant Director of Disabled Welfare K Jeevan Babu.

Addressing a meeting of parents of mentally and physically challenged persons at JNTU-Kakinada Civil Engineering Department hall here on Saturday, Mr. Jeevan Babu said there was nothing which the mentally challenged could not learn but they needed to be given moral and material support. The parents of such disabled persons should cooperate for successful implementation of the schemes aimed at welfare of their wards.

Technical guidance

The Disabled Welfare Department was taking the technical guidance of National Institute of Mentally Handicapped.

The need for rehabilitation centres was realised, the modalities of which were being worked out at the national level. Financial assistance was sought for this purpose from industrialists and philanthropists.
