Excise enters semifinals

THRISSUR: Central Excise, Kochi, staved off a strong challenge from Titanium (Thiruvananthapuram) 3-2 and entered the semifinals of the 34th Kerala State inter-club football championship at the Corporation Stadium at Thrissur on Saturday.

M.K. Sunil (fourth minute), C.C. Hansen (42nd) and Jibin Joseph (81st) scored for the Kochi side while Ebin Rose (35th) and Prasanth Simon (74th) netted Titanium’s goals.

Earlier, Malabar United, riding on Jacken Sebastian’s brace, brushed aside Kottayam’s Cosmos 3-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

K. Firoz gave Malabar the lead in the 54th minute while Jacken increased the tally in the 76th and 83rd minutes.

P.A. Midhun Ghosh scored for Cosmos in the 34th minute.

St. Albert’s posts win

Vivek N. Nair (54) and Laxman (3-8) helped St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam defeat Sacred Heart (Thevara) in a Pool ‘C’ league match of the first Aircel all-Kerala inter-collegiate Twenty20 cricket tournament at the BPCL Kochi Refinery Ground, Ambalamugal, on Saturday.

The scores:

St. Albert’s, Ernakulam 146 for five (Vivek N. Nair 54, Sanjo Johny three for 24) bt Sacred Heart, Thevara 92 in 16 overs (Jismon 42, Laxman three for 8).

Farook College, Kozhikode 122 in 17.1 overs (Aslam 35, Anas three for 23, Rakesh three for 24) lost to Devaswom Board, Sasthamcotta, Kollam 123 for two in 19.1 overs (Anas 36 n.o., Akash 34 n.o.).

CMS, Kottayam 93 in 19.1 overs (Kevin three for 22, Vishnu three for 10, Manu three for 9) lost to St. Paul’s, Ernakulam 94 for three in 15.5 overs.

Mar Athanasius, Kothamangalam 101 in 18.3 overs (Haneesh 62, Amar Khan three for 15) lost to St. Thomas, Thrissur 105 for five in 15.5 overs (Vishnu 52).

Sree Kerala Varma, Thrissur 100 in 20 overs (Sandeep three for 20) lost to MG, Thiruvananthapuram 102 for six in 17.4 overs.

University College, Thiruvananthapuram 144 in 20 overs (Austin 30, Anand four for 27) lost to NSS Hindu, Changanassery 105 for nine in 20 overs.

Binoy sparkles

S.R. Binoy hit 63 as Thrissur’s Harisree Vidyanidhi defeated Young Pioneers CC (Cherpu) by 38 runs in a first round match of the Santhosh Menon memorial all-Kerala cricket tournament at the CNN School Ground (Cherpu), Thrissur, on Saturday.

Wadakkanchery CC (Thrissur) got a walkover from the under-16 TDCA XI in the other first-round match.

The scores:

Harisree Vidyanidhi (Thrissur) 188 for eight in 30 overs (S.R. Binoj 63, T. Jithin 36, V. Shaju 35, Ghanashyam Prabhu four for 17) bt Young Pioneers CC (Cherpu) 150 in 28 overs (Ghanashyam Prabhu 36).

South takes lead

Anuj Jithin (three for 16) and Roshan (three for 44) helped South Zone take the first-innings lead against North in the Kerala State under-14 inter-zone cricket championship at the Fort Ground at Palakkad on Saturday.

Later, Arjun Narayanan (78 n.o.) and Vinayak Moorthy (68) came good as South made 171 for one in its second innings in the two-dayer which ended in a draw.

The scores:

South Zone 245 & 171 for one (Arjun Narayanan 78 n.o., Vinayak Moorthy 68) v North 137 (Anuj Jithin three for 16, Roshan three for 44).

Ruby, IPO score wins

Ruby Cricket Club and IPO ‘A’ posted crucial wins over Oxford Cricket Club and Bluestar Cricket Club in the Kollam district ‘A’ division cricket league.

The scores:

Oxford CC 148 in 35.3 overs (Amal Alex 46) lost to Ruby CC 152 for five in 31.3 overs (Azhar 60).

Bluestar CC 146 in 36.2 overs (Praveen 51 not out) lost to IPO ‘A’ 152 for seven in 31.4 overs (Vineesh 32).
