Chidi nets winner

KOLKATA: Defending champion Mohun Bagan consolidated its position on top of the standings by beating a strong George Telegraph by a solitary goal in the premier division of the Kolkata Football League at its home ground on Saturday.

Nigerian striker Edeh Chidi, who scored his sixth goal in five matches, found the mark after a through-pass from Tomba Singh cleared him inside the Telegraph box.

Bagan has tallied 15 points after five successive wins while Telegraph remains on six points gained from five matches.

ECR, SAI move up

East Coast Railways (ECR) drubbed Bihar Warriors 5-1 to reach the pre-quarterfinal stage of the qualifiers of the 114th Beighton Cup hockey at the SAI Eastern Centre on Saturday.

Amzad Khan and Binoy Kujur shared four goals while Dilip Karketta scored one to complete the ECR tally. Vikram Dhan scored the Warriors’ goal.

In another match, Dipak Soreng scored a hat-trick to help SAI Training Centre into the pre-quarters with a big 6-2 win against West Bengal Police.

David Dung Dung, Dipak Kullu and Ernest Surin scored one each to complete the SAI teams tally. Shakti Singh and Jugal Minz reduced the margin for Police.

Award nominees

The Football Players Association of India (FPAI) named Jose Barreto, Onyeka Okoli Odafa, Anthony Periera, Sunil Chetri and Rakesh Masih as the nominees for the ‘Peoples Player of the Year’ award. The winner will be decided by the fans who will vote online at www.fpaofindia.com .

The FPAI had previously announced the nominees in the four regular categories — best young player, best foreign player, best Indian player and best coach — the winners of which will be decided by the votes of the national squad players. The Peoples’ player award will be given on the FPAI awards night on December 13 along with the other awards.

Ghorai in joint lead

Unfancied local boy Samrat Ghorai of Disari Public School joined third seeded Prince Bajaj of Delhi Public School (Ghaziabad) in the lead with full six points each after the sixth round of the 21st The Telegraph schools chess here at the Gorky Sadan on Saturday.

In the sixth round Ghorai shocked top seeded Sayantan Das of Scottish Church Colegiate School in a long game to leapfrog into the lead.

In the same round Bajaj thrashed Rishav Mitra of Dum Dum Baidyanath Institute in only 25 moves after employing the Sicilian defence, to keep his winning run intact.

Earlier in the day, the fifth round games had five players — Sayantan Das, Samrat Ghorai, Prince Bajaj, Rishav Mitra and Chandrashish Majumder leading the charts.
