CHENNAI: The All India Lawyers Union, Tamil Nadu committee, on Saturday appreciated the Law Ministry’s stand that there was enough material for rejecting the name of Justice P.D. Dinakaran, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, for the post of Supreme Court Judge and no further proof was needed. “In fact, such a stand ought to have come from the collegium of the Supreme Court, that too at the earliest,” the association president, N.G.R. Prasad, said in a statement released here. The union said the need of the hour was a high-powered National Judicial Commission . The body should consist of members not only from the judiciary, but also elected representatives of the people. When the Tiruvallur district Collector sent his report, the collegium should not have merely put Mr. Justice Dinakaran’s name on hold or delinked it from other names, but should have promptly dropped it. The collegium not taking a decision and leaving it to the Law Ministry despite having so much evidence, had affected the image of the judiciary. Therefore, entrusting the selection exclusively to the collegium required immediate reconsideration, the union said.
