Queens of small screen hold court

Udaya Bhanu

The television channel boom in last decade has ushered in an entire new generation of talent to anchor a host of shows that are aired every day. From a peek into the kitchen of viewers for cookery shows to playing popular film songs to throwing challenges at participants in the contest show genre, a whole set of female anchors have come onto the scene.

Some hardly get noticed, few survive doing a show here and there, some create waves and then disappear but very few proves themselves to be indefatigable in the long run and adapt to changing requirements and demands of the viewers. Very few indeed and such successful anchors are seen as a guarantee for the ratings of a show by the channel. Cast her and we would have got viewers hooked to the show, planners with the channels tell themselves.

Who are the most favoured of the anchors at present? In terms of ratings, the most popular of them all happens to be Udaya Bhanu, one anchor who is there on almost all the channels and is the first name for any producer with a project on the drawing board. She anchors one of the most popular of the shows on Telugu channels ‘Re la re re la’ which refuse to give up in terms of innovations and her adaptability and inimitable style contributes a lot to the success of the sequel too.

Then, there is Suma whose charm and wit hardly seems to have been impacted despite all these years and having started during one-channel-days, she is an assured asset for producers and comes with an impeccable track that has very little to point out at. Not to forget is Shilpa Chakravarthy, whose vivacious presentation adds a certain charm to any show that she decides to be associated with.

Among others, those actively missed on the small screen these days are Surekha Vani and Swathi. Both had a very successful run but while the latter is busy making it big on the big screen, viewers do wait for Surekha to come up with something of her trademark presentation. Donning multiple caps, anchors such as Reshmi, Ashwini and Rani have been steady with their progress up the success ladder while one can’t ignore the ease and poise of Prashanthi, who with few more good opportunities hold promise of making it really big.

Spotted back on the small screen recently was Swathi Maitreyi and one can expect some alluring music show from her.
