Farmers plan agitations

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangham has said that it would hold a meeting on December 9 to chalk out agitations against the installation of meters for farm power supply connections untill the legislation in this regard is amended.

President of the Sangham M.R. Sivasamy said that in 1998 the Centre said that free power supply should not be continued and could be pursued only if State Governments came forward to meet the expenses arising out of free power supply. In 2002, Tamil Nadu Government suspended the free power supply and Rs. 250 was levied as the power tariff.Following opposition to it free power supply was resumed in 2004 and meters were not installed. In Tamil Nadu, next year TNEB was to be handed over to the Electricity Regulatory Authority. Now, the authority has ordered for fixing meters for pump sets.
