Jaipur team leaves for Copenhagen

JAIPUR: A 20-member delegation comprising farmers, activists, policy-makers and ecological experts left here on Sunday for Copenhagen under the banner, “Beyond Copenhagen: Collective action on climate change”, to take part in the side events at the U.N. Climate Summit beginning on Monday.

The delegation was led by Jaipur-based Centre for Community Economics and Development Consultants’ Society, which is one of the few organisations accredited to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The members of the delegation will provide their inputs for a new package likely to be evolved at the summit to combat global warming.

The Jaipur delegation will organise a side event on the theme, “Why agriculture must be focused in climate change negotiations”, at Copenhagen this coming Friday. Several Indian experts of international repute will address the event.

Centre’s secretary Sharad Joshi said here that the climate campaign launched by a committed group of experts had mobilised over 50 non-government and civil society organisations in the country along with a large number of public actors while gathering substantial insights in mitigation and adaptation that would be critical for the future.

The campaign undertaken during the past few months involved a wide range of stakeholders, who attended a series of regional consultations, workshops and public hearings in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand while sharing their stories on how climate change and its ramifications had affected their lives, livelihoods, economy and culture.

After covering different agro-climatic zones of the country, the campaign culminated at a national public hearing in New Delhi this past month.

Mr. Joshi said the delegation members would interact with the official negotiators at Copenhagen during the next two weeks and try to find a way for cutting the greenhouse emissions blamed for the rise in the average global temperatures observed in the recent decades.

The members of the delegation include “Jansatta” Editor Om Prakash Thanvi, Chhattisgarh Agriculture Minister C. S. Sahu, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Dave, former Rajasthan High Court judge Panachand Jain, Vijay Pratap Singh of South Asia Dialogue on Ecology and ground water expert Prakash Chhangani.
