PUDUKOTTAI: Students of the Panchayat Union Middle School in Ariyanipatti village near Gandarvakottai in the district have brought laurels to the institute through their success in the state-level contest on National Children’s Science Congress.

Their project on ‘Innovation – Neem leaves increase the percentage of bio-gas production’ has been selected for the national contest to be held in Ahmedabad on December 27.

A group of five students of the school – L. Prabhu, M. Santhoshkumar, E. Mani, V. Kumar and S. Prakash, through their project, have adopted a new technique of increasing the efficiency of bio-gas plants. Instead of the conventional use of hay, the students applied dried neem leaves. “Biogas productivity is far less when hay is mixed with cow-dung,” say the students.

The District Elementary Education Officer, V. Meenambal said that the ingredients of the neem leaves acted as a catalyst under certain pH condition in producing additional quantum of methane.

The District president of Tamil Nadu Science Forum L. Prabhakaran, said that the model would be an eye-opener for maximum utilisation of bio-energy. The Senior Atomic Scientist, Kalpakkam, Chennai, G. Srinivasan, said that the bio-fuel was a clean energy without causing any environmental pollution.

The Headmistress of the school, K. Valarmathi and the science guide S. Manikandan said that the students conducted several experiments to evolve the innovation.

The project was selected at the end of the three-day state-level contest held here recently. As many as 1,200 students from several parts of the state in the age-group 11-17 years participated in the contest and presented their projects.
