BANGALORE: Over 20 Harley-Davidson motorbikes whirred through the city on Sunday morning, meandering through over 65 kilometres of road on the occasion of the Harley-Davidson Founder’s Day.

The ride was organised to celebrate the launch of Harley-Davidson in the country, a motorbike that for many is not just iconic, but also the signifier of a ‘way of life’. All those who owned a Harley-Davidson were invited to be part of the ride.

Along with their polished bikes and biking gear, the owners assembled at the Jayamahal Palace Hotel, from where they took off in unison to ride across town. They headed to New BEL Road, and further towards the Bangalore International Airport, where they took a U-turn to head back into town. After a short stop at Palace Grounds, the bikers assembled at Olive Beach on Cunningham Road, where a celebration brunch hosted by chef Manu Chandra awaited them.

The city’s “glitterati” turned up in large numbers to celebrate the occasion. However, the main attraction was the impressive host of bikes that carried the riders.

Leading the riders were Anoop Prakash, Managing Director of Harley-Davidson, India, and Sanjay Tripathi, Director (Marketing), Harley-Davidson India, riding their model-year 2010 Harleys.

“Riding with Harley-Davidson owners and enthusiasts in Bangalore for the first time was a historic moment for us. Harley owners here have a strong passion for the motorcycles. They unite them with fellow riders from across the world,” said Mr. Prakash.

Among the city’s Harley owners were Ashish Kothare on his Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1000, Rohit Katti riding his Harley-Davidson Centennial Limited Edition Dyna Low Rider, Tilak Thomas on his Harley-Davidson Road King and Nandish Pal with his Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce.

With the Founder’s Ride, the company hopes to “represent a new chapter for motorcycling in India”, and make the experience of riding as enjoyable as possible.
