The aim is to capture about 10 per cent of the seven billion dollar market for ornamental fishes within the next seven years. Nedumbassery: The Kerala Aqua Ventures International Limited (KAVIL), a public–private partnerhsip headed by the Government of Kerala to promote ornamental fishery in the country, has formally started the export of ornamental fishes from here. The first consignment to Paris, comprising about 4,000 pet fishes in 15 cartons would be airlifted from Cochin airport on December 7. Addressing the media at the airport here on Sunday, Fisheries Minister as well as the vice-chairman of KAVIL S.Sarma said that apart from France, the company had already received trade enquiries from China and Hong Kong and that it was all set to expand its export to these destinations within a couple of months. The company was also planning to set up import hubs in New York and China as part of streamlining the supply chain. Subsidy for farmThe Minister added that plans were afoot to develop about 10,000 homestead farms on which the State government would give a subsidy of Rs.50,000 per farm. Further, the construction of six out of the twelve proposed export hubs with facilities for the pre-export conditioning of the fish and packing for export transportation is nearing completion. KAVIL also incorporates fish producers from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu and has set up both homestead and satellite farms in these states. Aqua parkIt is setting up the first aqua technology park with various administrative and scientific facilities to support the tropical fish industry at Kadungallor near Aluva. A full-fledged launching of the company, floated with an aim to capture about 10 per cent of the seven billion dollar international market for ornamental fishes within the next seven years, is expected to be carried out in January 17. A Gopalakrishnan Nair, director of KAVIL and Kapila Tissera, an industry expert from Srilanka were also present on the occasion.
