PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged protests at nine places across Puducherry and Karaikal on Monday demanding measures to control escalating prices. The parties urged the government to sell 15 essential commodities through ration shops and demanded a ban on online trading. Protests were held at eight places in Puducherry – J.N. Street, Collectorate at Saram, tashildar office at Villianur, Revenue Office at Karikalambakkam, post office at Thirukannur, tashildar offices at Madagadipet and Bahour and Ariyankuppam and one place at Karaikal. Over 3,600 activists of the CPI and the CPI(M) courted arrest in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts. They staged demonstration in at least 36 places in both the districts urging the Centre for steps to tackle inflation.
