Citizens name zoo animals

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Young animals at the Mysore zoo have been given names suggested by animal lovers from the city.

A hamadryas baboon was named Punya as suggested by K.S. Pavitra of Lakshmipuram; a pair of common marmosets were named Purva (K.R. Varsha Shenoy of Siddharathnagar) and Manali (S. Gnakshi Anchan of R.S. Naidu Nagar), two female gaur calves were named Poorvi (Arpita M.N. of Srirampura 2nd stage) and Inchara (Arunakshi B.L. of Siddhrathnagar), and a sloth bear was named Mithila (K.M. Ramachandra of Siddharthanagar). The zoo had invited suggestions in September in a bid to involve more people in the functioning of the zoo.

People whose suggestions have been taken will be awarded prizes in December, said zoo director Vijay Ranjan Singh.
