India, Russia to step up joint fight against terrorism

Vladimir Radyuhin and Sandeep Dikshit

MOSCOW: India and Russia have agreed to deepen and intensify their strategic partnership and step up their joint fight against terrorism.

A Joint Declaration adopted at the Indo-Russian summit here on Monday stated that the Strategic Partnership between the two countries was “the culmination of the long and multifaceted bilateral relations,” “a key foreign policy priority for both the Sides.”

“This deepening partnership is not impacted in any way by the engagement of the two countries with the rest of the world. It is a time-tested and enduring friendship which is mutually beneficial and which has emerged as a factor of peace and stability in the region and the world,” the Declaration said.

The Declaration said Russia “considers India a deserving and strong candidate for a permanent seat in an expanded United Nations Security Council.”

India and Russia called on the international community to “enhance efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

“The sides intend to further develop Russian-Indian bilateral cooperation in combating new challenges and threats, including such cooperation within the framework of the Russia-India Working Group on Combating International Terrorism.”

In particular, the two countries urged the international community “to comply with the provisions of international counter-terrorism conventions and protocols including the principle, ‘either prosecute or extradite’, regarding the persons accused of committing acts of terror.”

Climate change

Recognising the urgency of action to combat climate change, Russia and India affirmed their readiness to work for the success of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen.
