A day for mentally challenged

Kozhikode: The National Day of the Mentally Challenged was celebrated in the city on Tuesday with a public meeting at the Town Hall organised by the Kozhikode Corporation and the Association for the Welfare of the Handicapped (AWH).

An awareness camp was conducted for parents and children enrolled in 35 special schools in north Kerala.

City Police Commissioner S. Sreejith flagged off an awareness rally at 10 a.m. to kick off the day’s events. Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the meeting at the Town Hall. Paul Kallanode, artist, inaugurated a painting competition for children with special needs.

AWH secretary C.P. Abubaker distributed prizes to the winners. Following the contest, Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef inaugurated the cultural programmes presented by the students.

The Social Welfare Department celebrated the day at the Social Welfare Complex, Vellimadukunnu. District Social Welfare Officer Nanakkal Mohammed inaugurated the celebrations. ICDS programme officer Roy Chacko presided.
