GUNTUR: Amidst the sleaze of corruption marring the implementation of NREGS in the district, Pedakakani mandal stands untainted. The Social Audit conducted in 33 mandals placed this mandal at the bottom of the table with absolutely no misappropriation of funds. Rajupalem has earned the ignominy of leading the table with Rs.2.26 crore being misappropriated, followed by Bollapalli (Rs.1.46 crore). According to Mandal Parishad Development Officer G. Joseph Kumar, what made it possible was the transparency involved in preparation of muster rolls, complete involvement of workers and breaking the nexus of contractors and local representatives. Out of 16,000 households, 8,686 job cards were issued, who have been involved in desilting of canals and tanks, levelling of burial grounds and laying of roads. Works amounting to Rs.3.88 crore have been sanctioned ever since the scheme was launched in 2007 out of which works worth Rs.1.09 crore were taken up in 2009-2010. Though works have been progressing at a steady pace with only Rs. 60.97 lakh works being completed, the local machinery has not left any scope neither for misappropriation of funds nor use of machinery. “We have been able to significantly reduce the migration of labour during non-agricultural season, raise the minimum wage of labour and provide equal wages to men and women,” Mr. Raj Kumar told The Hindu on Tuesday. The mandal has proposed 270 works with a value of Rs. 45 lakh to be taken up this year.
